World Famous Latin Dancers to
Teach at Web of Compassion Fundraiser in Princeton |
In
late 2006, several devastating typhoons and mudslides hit parts of
the Philippines, causing massive destruction to the hometown of Grace
Asagra Stanley. She was so moved to help her countrymen that she conceived
of Web of Compassion, an organization to raise funds for the massive
relief effort. Grace is an avid dancer, as of last April, she coordinated
an fundraiser based on multi-ethnic dance to raise awareness of the
situation in the Philippines. It was a success and Web of Compassion
raised over $5000 which was sent directly to Diwa Ng Ugnayan Inc,
in the Philippines and is now being used to support their dental mission.
As a result of the positive support of the community
to this fledgling organization, a not-for-profit charity was formed
with the mission of raising funds for organizations whose aid is distributed
directly to people in need and which incur minimal administrative
costs. Web of Compassion is truly unique. It was born out of a need
to support the people of Grace Stanley's hometown in the Philippines,
and with the wonderful support of our NJ community is growing to become
a charity which will use dance as the medium of fundraising to support
worthy charitable activities in the world and in the US.
This year, Web of Compassion has selected No
More Victims (www.nomorevictims.org),
an organization which works to obtain medical sponsorships for war-injured
Iraqi children and to forge ties between the children, their families
and communities in the United States. No More Victims raises funds
through charitable donations to bring injured children to the US for
medical treatment which is unavailable in Iraq.
To that end, On May 3, 2008, especially for Cinco
de Mayo, Web of Compassion will host its second fundraising event,
a LATIN DANCE WORKSHOP, PERFORMANCE AND PARTY, at
the Suzanne Patterson Center in Princeton, NJ. Grace and several people
on the Board of Directors of Web of Compassion are Dance aficionados,
and thought that this would be a perfect way to get people together,
dance to the Latin rhythms, eat good food, and have fun, while helping
a most worthy charity. Web of Compassion feels that there is no better
way to unite people than through music and dance.
The day will begin at 11 am with workshops in Mambo, Salsa, Bachata,
and Son Cubano presented by many of the top teacher/performers in
the region. We are privileged to have the support of Michael Andina,of
Philadelphia, Jose "Papo" Diaz of Trenton , and New York
instructor/performers Yuki Komiyama, Franck Muhel and Felix "Pupy"
Insua. As a special treat, the future generations of dancers, Kids
con Estilo and Lisa Botallico's Flamenco Kids will perform as well.
During the evening, there will be a keynote speech by Cole
Miller, President of No More Victims who will describe the
wonderful work of his organization.
The event will continue until 11:30 pm with a Latin dance party. Live
music will be provided by Ray Rodriguez and his orchestra Swing Sabroso
of New BrunswickNJ. And there will be nonstop DJ music by Funkologist.
Food for the event has been generously donated by local restaurants.
